FlightCheck Professional

FlightCheck is the revolutionary stand-alone application that scans documents using a simple drag-and-drop approach to warn of over 150 potential problems, easily and automatically.

FlightCheck scans native document files, even without the application that created it, to eliminate using the eyeball method to check documents. FlightCheck verifies all the documents' elements such as colors, fonts, and images and ensures they are valid. After verification, FlightCheck reports a host of possible problems such as missing images or fonts — even fonts in EPSF files.

FlightCheck watches for problems such as unused spot colors that may result in printing additional plates, fonts that have been stylized from a style menu, image boxes that have a background color of None, RGB, TIFF, and JPG compressed images, and so on. These problems could result in poor printing or worse yet, stop the print job. After the user is ensured all is well, FlightCheck collects all related files into a single job, including images and both screen and printer fonts, and puts them into a special FlightCheck-approved folder.

FlightCheck 5.7 new enhancements are:

• Brand new Ground Control for detecting embedded fonts in native files;

• Improved accuracy for reading Illustrator CS EPS files;

• Improved support for fonts activated through Extensis Suitcase;

• Detection of PANTONE colorized text for both InDesign and QuarkXPress;

• Detection of boxes with a 'Content Of None' in QuarkXPress;

Features:

• Carbon support for Macintosh OS X, including Tiger 10.4;

• PDF FlightPlans include PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3;

• special PDF object model;

• cross-platform ground controls;

• supports OpenType fonts;

• preflight support for Microsoft Word v4, 5, 6, 8 (Office 2000), and 9 (Office 2001) for both Mac and Windows files;

• enhanced speed;

• Ghent PDF Workgroup rules added to PDF FlightPlan;

• Pass4Press PDF specification check added to PDF FlightPlan;

• German, Dutch, and French language options in one package;

• 70 new views which are essentially the same as the ground controls for colors, fonts, and images (these enable the user to get, for example, a specific list of just TIFF images or TrueType fonts, and zeroing in on (or printing) user-definable specific data;

• four new ground controls for detecting the presence of application-generated clipping paths, ICC Profile usage, PostScript color-space management and ink density (highest pixel value in rasterized TIFF or EPS images); and

• a next problem button has been added to the problems layout (locate the next occurrence of any problems based on the currently selected criteria, and skip pages that do not have any related problems).

Ideabook for PageMaker

The reason some designers shy away from using templates is they assume all templates are finished designs: boilerplate layouts complete with photographs of people shaking hands — add a phone number and address and send it to the printer. They are a feeble attempt to remove the designers from the equation. They miss the point that clients NEED what we bring to the table — they want something UNIQUE! Imagine going to all the trouble and expense of writing, producing, and printing a brochure and finding out a competitor is using the exact same boilerplate design.

The Ideabook templates are something else entirely. They offer a detailed framework for finishing, not a rigid layout. As a designer, the author is sensitive to other designers’ needs and has created a templates keeping it clean and simple — the ideal form for another designer to pick up and run with.

The InDesign, QuarkXPress, and PageMaker Ideabooks get designers back to making money and free them to spend more time doing the important tasks. Instead of spending 15 minutes to create a simple layout, spend 15 seconds. For the complex jobs such as books, newsletters, catalogs, and reports, Ideabook will save hours.

All the information elements are in position: placeholders for text and graphics (a great reminder of what to include); page sizes, folds, margins, columns, gutters, and guides are set; styles palettes are configured, ready for text. Use a template as is or as a framework for a new design. The Ideabook helps produce good-looking, marketing materials, better and faster than ever before. For beginning users of InDesign, QuarkXPress, or PageMaker, the Ideabooks will help you get started with projects you don’t feel confident in creating from scratch.

Two years in the making, the Ideabook represents literally thousands of hours of layout, design, and information planning that a designer need not repeat.

The InDesign, QuarkXPress, and PageMaker Ideabooks each include:

315 Templates on a hybrid (Mac and Windows) CD-ROM: 725 actual document pages and 25 years of calendar designs (three variations — an additional 792 pages). Chapters 1 and 2 include the basics of project production, specifics such as choosing styles of clip art, and lots of tips on topics such as working with illustrators and photographers, choosing paper, working with commercial printers, and so on.

JobCapture

JobCapture (formerly known as IntelliTrack) is a turnkey system designed for production studios that tracks time and activity in many applications — with minimal intrusion to workflow. It works on each operator’s machine and reports valuable job-related information to a central server. When in operation, it mostly goes unnoticed, so it’s easier on users than filling in forms on an endless paper trail.

Features automatic tracking for:

• any application;

• time spent on jobs;

• job numbers;

• activity types;

• user names;

• machine name;

• activity index;

• non-computer jobs;

• comments;

• revisions;

• applications used;

• document names; and

• costs.

Easily define the way JobCapture works with the preferences dialog. Choose which applications to track, minimum billing time, when and if the electronic job jacket dialog appears, and so on.

The list editor is used to define the activities that appear as options in the popup menus in the job jacket dialogs. Users will then be able to categorize the work they do in ways that are tailored to their business.

The auto job jacket is the dialog box that appears when a document is closed in one of the applications being tracked. The job types and activities can each have their own billing parameters.

The manual job jacket appears when add job is clicked. It is specifically designed to enter time outside of the electronic environment, such as meetings, mounting boards, and so on.

The IT database can be used at any time to view the status of any job on the network. View data in many ways, from time spent on jobs, or in application, or by user, activity, machine, and so on.

PrintCapture

PrintCapture transparently keeps track of the entire print history of a document. This is especially useful in departments which bill for color prints. PrintCapture indicates how many prints were made to which printer at what time and date. This running log is kept with the document in its folder, and can be viewed as a text document or imported into any database or spreadsheet software. This product makes billing more accurate and easier on both operators and administrative personnel.

Features:

• client popup menu and data sent to database;

• client popup changes job number;

• popup shows only this client's job numbers;

• auto-archiving of database;

• easier to customize;

• three different styles of print-tracking modes to choose from (normal enables users to type in any job number or select from a list; job number requires the user to select job numbers from a list; or stealth with no dialog interface);

• improved manager application allows multi-criteria filtering so print information can be sorted to only that which is needed;

• optionally track only certain printers;

• comment field;

• optional centrally served popup list of job numbers that sorts itself depending on what has been entered, allowing for hundreds of numbers; and

• direct integration with FileMaker Pro

Free with PrintCapture, the stand-alone print log viewer tracks a file or enables the drag and drop on the print log viewer to automatically compile useful information about the print history of a job. In addition to giving totals it takes the various user-defined billing rates and calculates up-to-date billing totals for the job, and can print the information.

print log viewer is a System extension that continually monitors printing from any application. Once in place, any printing which uses background printing, including all desktop printers, will cause a small extra dialog to appear which allows (or requires) the user to enter a job number for the print. This information is then added to a print log which can then be viewed with print track manager. Information tracked includes: number of pages, number of copies, page size, printer name, machine name, job number, creator application, document name, user name, and print area.

PrintShop Mail

PrintShop Mail is an application for variable printing. PrintShop Mail does only one job. It personalizes layouts. Using familiar layout and database tools, create the layout and manage the necessary data. Then let PrintShop Mail do the rest. The document layout is sent to the RIP only once, and variables (the personalization), text, or graphics are exchanged at high speed.

This technology enables output at a maximum speed on any PostScript printer. The RIP plays an important role in the overall speed of the process. High-volume mailings and sophisticated layouts cannot be created with word processors. In such a solution every single page will be generated, transported over the network, and processed separately before finally being RIP-ed and printed. This might be practical with one hundred addresses, but higher volumes inevitably block the entire production site for hours on end. PrintShop Mail is the answer to that problem.

One of the biggest advantages of PrintShop Mail is the seamless inclusion of colors and fonts into documents. Use any font, in any style, size, and direction (including barcodes and OCR-B fonts). The Macintosh version also allows the user to apply variable images such as signatures and photos.

Features:

• easy personalization;

• employs professional layouts created in QuarkXPress, PageMaker, and other popular applications;

• easy use of data from any database that supports DBF exports;

• prints and personalizes in one step;

• uses color to make mailings more attractive;

• Macintosh version supports variable images;

• optimizes PostScript output;

• evaluates and combines data with a simple command language;

• supports barcodes and OCR-B;

• extended ASCII conversion between Macintosh and Windows, various extended ASCII character sets included;

• splits job functionality; and

• available in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

On the Mac platform the following features were in version 4.X, but are NOT included in version 5:

• No Guidelines

• No Imposition (and no cropmarks)

• Can do Repetition (but don't see little preview window)

• No Hot folders

The Designer version prints only demo pages, but gives the user the opportunity to design a complete variable-data print job. This job can be accepted by the PrintShop Mail provider using the same software, including the option to print up to several numbers of records. The Limited version processes 200,000 records.

Q2ID

Q2ID (QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign) is a Pug-in for Adobe InDesign that provides users a quick and easy way to migrate their QuarkXPress projects into a new Adobe InDesign document. The conversion is enabled with a single click using the file menu in InDesign.

Intricate details of the content within the QuarkXPress project are instantly recreated within InDesign. Items converted from QuarkXPress include: page positioning, color models, fonts and styles, images, and text attributes as well as tables, layers, blends, runarounds, linked and anchored boxes, PANTONE colors, and other color models.

The Q2ID document-conversion technology saves countless hours of scanning, re-keying, and formatting. This product will convert and transform files created from within QuarkXPress — Windows or Mac — into an InDesign file, that then can be opened on both platforms.

It is important to note that even though Q2ID provides many benefits, conversion is not perfect. This is because manufacturers of desktop-publishing applications have their own, unique methods of text rendering. Therefore, text flow will not be completely accurate. Depending on the use of custom kerning, tracking, leading, and so on, more or less rework may be required — some rework will always be required. We suggest that all converted documents are proofed before output.

Features:

• preserves intellectual property investment;

• enables easy data migration;

• eliminates time recreating content;

• reduces costs recreating content;

• freedom to choose an authoring system;

• supports InDesign CS2 and CS3;

• converts QuarkXPress v3.3, 4.X, 5.X, 6.X and 7.X;

• simple to install;

• quick and easy to use; and

• swift return on investment.

Sonar Bookends

Sonar Bookends is a powerful index generator capable of producing both an index and a table of contents for a variety of applications (e.g., PDF, Microsoft Word 97 and 98, QuarkXPress, and PageMaker). Several types of indices can be produced, from a basic index to a multilevel index. The index can include chapter and file names, and can be of a single file or an entire folder. Cross-reference information can also be included.

There are three basic types of indices that can be produced by Sonar Bookends:

• Word frequency — a fast, effortless index based on how often words appear in the documents being indexed (words which are common, and therefore relatively unimportant, are automatically eliminated).

• Word/phrase list — based on a user-supplied list of words and phrases stored in a text-only file; each word or phrase is indexed. Entries can incorporate advanced-indexing techniques such as Boolean operations and wild cards. Since the word/phrase list is a text-only file, it can be generated in a variety of ways. For example, the list can be created using a word processor, downloaded from another computer, exported from a database, and so on.

• Proper Noun — Sonar Bookends can find and index proper nouns. Using capitalization and punctuation rules, Sonar Bookends can determine which words make up a proper noun. Proper nouns which occur too many times (above a user-defined maximum frequency) are automatically eliminated.

The three methods can be mixed and matched to produce a final index. For example, a word-frequency list can be combined with a proper-noun list, discarding any unwanted words and proper nouns. The list could also be augmented by typing in additional phrases. The final word/phrase list would then be given to Sonar Bookends for indexing. The index is saved as a text file for import into any word-processing or desktop-publishing program.

Other features which add to Sonar Bookends' flexibility and versatility include:

• case-sensitivity option;

• support for non-English characters and special symbols;

• capability of reversing first and last names;

• treatment of hyphens based on context; and

• sorting of both single-level and multilevel indices.
