ARTS PDF Variform Lite

Variform PDF significantly extends the usability of Acrobat forms.

Until now, a significant barrier to using Acrobat forms is its focus on web-server applications; too many Acrobat users, such forms projects are beyond their reach, underfunded, or organizationally difficult to implement.

There are millions of private databases on desktop computers as spreadsheets, PC databases, and custom queries of mainframe data, all capable of producing the data in a delimited text file. Variform PDF enables the user to merge these data files into Acrobat forms, and print the results or save them to file (PostScript or PDF via Acrobat Distiller). By allowing the selection of any system font when merging field data, Variform PDF can maintain corporate identity standards making it great for a myriad of mail-merge, forms-filling, and other variable-data applications.

No need to edit every form field in the PDF to change fonts. Variform PDF’s font-selection capability lets the user select any font on the system and assign it to form fields. Selected fonts will be used when Variform PDF merges the data. There is even an option to embed the fonts in the document for reuse the next time the form is merged.

ARTS Split & Merge Lite

ARTS Split & Merge is an Acrobat Plug-in for splitting and merging batches of PDFs.

The split functionality enables the user to split one or more PDFs based on page groups, page ranges, bookmarks, and page marks. The merge functionality enables the user to quickly sort and then combine a collection of PDFs.

Features:

• new to v2.2, when splitting and retaining bookmarks and or links, documents will split over ten times faster than ever before;

• new to v 2.1, manage page marks with import and export features;

• split into n pages, into files containing n pages per file;

• split by page marks, visually highlight sections of a PDF to split;

• split by page ranges, pages, or odd/even pages;

• split based on bookmark hierarchy;

• merge large document collections together;

• batch process, use Split command to process large PDF collections;

• retain links, update links, bookmarks and destinations between split PDFs;

• v2.2 will split ten times faster when retaining bookmarks and links;

• merge from control file for more advanced assembly;

• save and reuse jobs;

• enter the page range of each file added and append multiple jobs within the one control file;

• convert and combine from different file types, such as DOC, XLS, EPS, PDF, and so on in one step, no need to convert to PDF first;

• split option to update title using output file name will use the target file name (without the .PDF extension) as the document information title; and

• additional options to merge only odd pages, even pages, last page, or first page and to enter the page numbers in a text box (e.g., 1,2,5-10,100).

Split PDFs into a set of PDFs with each containing a specific number of pages. For example, choosing to split a 30-page PDF into five-page PDFs will produce six PDFs.

Use the page marks toolbar buttons to visually highlight sections of a PDF to split. Use them to name the files to be split and to add document information to them, including title, subject, author, and keywords.

Use the bookmark hierarchy and bookmark levels to determine how to split PDFs. This can be particularly useful when bookmarks are based on the sections and structure of PDFs. When splitting, ARTS Split & Merge uses the bookmark text to form the file names of the resulting PDFs.

Benefits:

• ARTS Split & Merge Lite enables the user to split PDFs based on first-level bookmarks.

• ARTS Split & Merge Plus enables the user to split PDFs based on any range of bookmark levels. For example, to create a separate PDF based on sections, and if the chapters and headings are all level 2 and 3 bookmarks, setting the levels as 2 to 3 would generate the correct splitting process.

Combine the use of parameters in the split by page range feature to perform splitting processes.

Benefits:

• split individual pages into new file(s);

• split page ranges into new file(s);

• combine pages and pages ranges;

• separate page ranges into separate output files;

• extract unwanted pages;

• use overlapping page ranges to create multiple files;

• split into odd and even pages; or

• reverse page order.

By combining page numbers with simple parameters (commas, dashes, semicolons, odd, and even), specify which pages should be merged together to form a new PDF, and which pages should be split separately to form another PDF.

A common problem when splitting PDFs is that most of the connections between the links and their end points are broken as they are no longer located in the same PDF or because the pages have been rearranged. The advanced update navigation elements feature updates all these links in bookmarks, links, and destinations, ensuring all links are maintained.

Merge large PDF collections together using the properties of the files to be merged. It's easy to order files prior to adding them to the merge list — making it much easier to manage when trying to merge a large number of PDFs. Once PDFs are added to the merge list, edit the order and page ranges to be included in the merge. Supports an unlimited number of files per process.

Use the split command to process batches of PDFs. Acrobat comes with its own batch-processing tool that enables the user to set up simple processes by combining a series of commands. ARTS Split & Merge adds the split command, allowing the user to combine these with Acrobat's built-in commands to process large batches of PDFs.

A range of file-naming conventions includes the addition of a base file name, as well as a range of suffixes that can be added, including: number, padded number starting at, page range (pxx-pyy), letter, or nothing (used in splitting by bookmarks or page marks).

Automator

Automator is a robust, very powerful, automation Acrobat Plug-in that delivers a professional solution for working with PDFs. It is a unique automation macro-builder tool designed to be used in conjunction with other Mapsoft publishing tools, that have been designed to assist publishers and writers in working with PDFs.

Sold Separately: AcroBatch, a very powerful feature that makes the majority of batching commands supported within Acrobat available from within the Automator environment. BookMarker creates a hierarchical set of bookmarks automatically. Bookmarks up to any nested level can be created, based on the headings found within a document. ContentScaler changes the size of a page’s content without altering the actual page dimensions. DocuMerger enables the user to merge template PDFs with existing document content. Flattener dramatically reduces the size of certain PDFs by removing active parts such as navigation buttons and forms. Flattener can also move content from annotation (such as form content and markup) right into the document so that it can be archived or viewed easily. ImagePlacer stamps images in a variety of formats onto PDFs, either as an overlay on top of existing content, or as a watermark below it. Images can also be transparent. Impress text stamps onto selected file(s). Stamps can include variable information such as date/time information and page numbering, including Bates numbering and Roman numerals formats. InfoSetter sets Acrobat information options including title, subject, author, keywords, and the URL used for links to the web. MaskIt masks or hides the content of selected areas within a page or range of pages. MediaSizer alters the media size of the selected PDF without changing its content. OpenOptions manages Acrobat’s document opening options, including initial view, window, and user-interface options. PageManager enables the user to create a new blank PDF, or to create new pages and specify size, and remove, insert, and replace existing pages. PDFSplitter splits a large PDF into smaller documents. Optionally, any preexisting links within the original document can be retained when that document is split into smaller documents. SecuritySetter manages Acrobat’s security options within a document, including owner password and access rights. ThumbNails exports thumbnails for selected document(s) as image files for use in desktop publishing or on web sites. TOCBuilder generates tables of content automatically from existing bookmarks within a file. TOCBuilder automatically creates the linked references as well.

Select any of the above-listed Mapsoft tools for use with Automator, either individually (across single or multiple documents) or in combination with each other. If used in combination, they can be used in whichever combination and order required to create a sequence of actions (known as an Automator configuration) for those tools. Each tool can be added to this sequence more than once, and each time it is used it can have different settings. This sequence of actions can then be applied to one document or across a library of documents. Sequences of tasks can be saved and reused.

BoxEditor

Box Editor is a low-cost Acrobat Plug-in that enables advertisers to easily set accurate bleed and trim dimensions or bounding boxes to define the size of an ad. PDF/X files have been widely adopted for advertising workflow, but the bleed and trim data required by the PDF/X standard often contain incorrect information leading to costly mistakes and lost time. To place ads on pages and impose pages and spreads efficiently, publishers need PDF/X files from advertisers with accurate data in bleed and trim boxes.

BoxEditor allows advertisers to import and export bleed and trim data in the new XML format to create a library of ad specifications for different publications. Box dimensions can be entered as decimals (2.25) or in fractions (2 1/4). A powerful grouping feature allows the advertiser to position both the trim and bleed boxes at the same time.

BoxEditor also includes unique capabilities that act as a control panel for digital ads. Publishers can see PDF/X-specific information including trapping status and outputintent values. The Vue/X mode automatically configures Acrobat to view PDF/X files correctly. With one mouse click, publishers can delete all of the content outside the trim or bleed area removing unwanted registration marks and slugs. The fonts and colors tabs can be used to quickly identify all the fonts and colors that were used in the ad.

Apago's open XML format makes it easy for publishers to publish their ad specifications on their websites, enabling advertisers to easily download the XML file and import it into BoxEditor software.

Currently, advertisers or their prepress providers visit each publication's web site, print the specifications for reference, and manually enter the bleed and trim sizes to create a template page in a layout program such as QuarkXPress or InDesign. The new XML format allows all of the specifications for each publication to be in one downloadable file, thereby avoiding data-entry errors.

Although XML is well suited to the task of exchanging ad specifications, previous attempts were complex and not widely implemented. The new BoxEditor allows both a standard way for publishers to supply the bleed and trim data, and a simple and inexpensive software tool that allows advertisers to import that data and easily manipulate it within a PDF/X file.

Ad specifications compatible with BoxEditor will be available for downloading from the ad-production sites of Time, Inc., and CMP Media in late March, 2004.

Other publishers interested in making their specifications available to advertisers electronically can view and access the format compatible with BoxEditor on the Apago website at www.apago.com. There is no charge for, and no restrictions on, the use of the XML format.

ContentScaler

The ContentScaler Acrobat Plug-in reduces or increases the size of the contents of a page (or pages) within PDFs. This tool is especially useful for scaling the contents of documents that do not print correctly because their margins are too small, but it is also useful when coupled with MediaSizer (sold separately) to change the media size of a document.

Anything within the annotation layer, including link boxes, will not be scaled. To include these items in a scaled document, use Flattener first (sold separately). Manage multiple documents in one batch operation, by using ContentScaler in conjunction with Mapsoft’s unique macro builder tool, Automator (sold separately).

Manufacturer: Mapsoft Computer Services Limited

CopyFILE

The CopyFILE(TM) Acrobat Plug-in is designed to create a link action allowing a user to download either a single file or multiple files from a link embedded within a PDF. Quickly and easily create CopyFILE links within a PDF to aid in delivery of additional content or technical information. The CopyFILE Plug-in consists of two key components. This includes an authoring component and a user component.

The CopyFILE authoring component is a Plug-in supported by using Acrobat Standard or Professional. The user component is a Reader-enabled version of the CopyFILE Plug-in with the ability for the CopyFILE action to be recognized and display a dialog box enabling the user to select a single file or multiple files to be copied or downloaded.

Features:

• distribution of additional or supporting content found within PDFs;

• ability to control existing technical or supporting content files to audience;

• deliver current and accurate information related to information in the PDF;

• integrate existing technical content with existing product information contained in a PDF;

• author once and publish to multiple platforms CD-ROM, internet, intranet, network environment, and so on using relative links;

• quickly create links to integrate existing technical data with data found in a PDF;

• uses standard Acrobat link toolbar to create links;

• uses existing PDFs and content to create CopyFILE links for integration; and

• allows content to be delivered through PDF over web, CD-ROM, or network.

Manufacturer: Greiner Consulting Services

DocuMerger

DocuMerger, an Acrobat Plug-in, will merge material from an existing PDF into another PDF. The DocuMerger Plug-in merges a selected page from one document into another document. The document from which material is to be extracted (the source document) can be any length: but only one page can be extracted at any one time for merging into the target document.

Specify if the merged content is to be placed into the source document as an overlay, on top of any existing page content (for example a letterhead) or as a watermark below the existing page content. Optionally specify those page(s) on which the merged content should appear.

If the merging is performed on documents with different media sizes, the bottom left corner of the source document is aligned with the bottom left corner of the target document.

The DocuMerger Plug-in is particularly useful when adding a logo from one file into another. When using more than one logo, the user could optionally store all the logos in one file to be merged and then select the page containing the logo to extract.

With Automator (sold separately), several different merge operations can be performed on a file. For example, generate an address overlay, followed by a logo overlay, and then add a letterhead. Optionally, each different element could be held on different pages of the same file.

Manufacturer: Mapsoft Computer Services Limited

DogEars

DogEars is a Plug-in for use with Adobe Acrobat for marking pages within a document so that a reader can quickly flip back to them when required. Marking an electronic file with DogEars is analogous to folding pages down in a physical book. Once a page is marked with a dog ear, a symbol representing a turned-down page is placed on the top-right of that page.

In addition to using DogEars to locate specific pages within a document quickly and easily, optionally extract all the pages on which dog ears have been set into a new PDF. When this process is implemented, all the pages within a document that have been marked with a dog ear will automatically be pulled into a new file. All pages that have not been marked with a dog ear will be omitted.

Manage multiple documents in one batch operation, by using DogEars in conjunction with Mapsoft’s unique macro builder tool, Automator (sold separately).
